Save the date for November 20, 2020. That’s the projected date for the official premiere of the long-awaited Dune reboot by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.
Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve takes centre stage with Dune, which is expected to start shooting this Spring.
Joining him on the writing team (besides himself) will be Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange).
Already, the cast is quite the ensemble lineup. Leading the line as protagonist Paul Atreides is Timothée Chalamet (Interstellar). Joining Chalamet are the likes of Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2), Stellan Skarsgard (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible: Fallout), Javier Bardem (Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge), and Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming).
The latest to join this extensive list of big names on the Dune project is none other than the Atlantean King, Jason Momoa, whose pivotal role in Aquaman helped propel the DC Extended Universe to new heights by breaking the US$1B box office record at record speed.
But we digress.
This isn’t the first time the Frank Herbert classic novel has been adapted for the silver screen. Once upon a time, a Dune movie directed by film luminary David Lynch premiered in 1984, with Kyle MacLachlan (a staple in most Lynch films) starring as Paul Atreides. That film was a box office dud, despite Lynch’s reputation as one of the most iconic filmmakers, and for good reason.
“[Dune] is going to be a long process, and I want a long process because I need to digest what happened in the past six years,” explained Villeneuve to Consequence Without Sound back in 2017, when he first got on board with the Dune project. “I need to figure out how I want to evolve as a filmmaker, and more importantly, I need to make sure that I will do my homework to make this adaptation possible. If you ask me right now what I want to do in life, it would be Dune. That’s what I want to do, just focus on that.”
Considering how well Villeneuve steered Blade Runner 2049 to success, we won’t be surprised if he does the same proper justice to Frank Herbert’s definitive science fiction epic.
